Deep dive into your rates
As the third instalment of annual rates quickly approaches, many people find themselves wondering exactly how their rates are apportioned.
With increasing public interest in understanding the flow of their hard-earned money, it’s more important than ever to provide transparency for how rates are allocated across various services and programs offered through Manawatū District Council.
Rates are divided across several key areas, each playing an essential role in the functioning of our District. The largest charge from each invoice is to wastewater, followed by roading and general. Water supply is a quick fourth before parks and reserves rounds out the top five.
A full breakdown of the distribution can be found in the table below.
Understanding the allocation of your rates can provide a clearer picture of how your money is working for you and the role you play in helping to ensure that levels of service and key areas within the District are maintained, developed or grown.
Each year Council’s are required to complete an Annual Report. The report is summary of the work that has been completed within that financial year. The report is audited to ensure that Council is accurately disclosing it’s performance and that Council complies with accounting practices in New Zealand.
As citizens, it’s important to have an understanding of the work Council does, the vision it shares for the District and how well Council is performing. MDC’s Annual Report is a great place to start.
