A strengthened Stewart Road is now open

Stewart Road has been widened, renewed and ultimately strengthened.  The work is complete and the road is now open.

Although only 2.6 km in total length and falling within the Manawatū District, Stewart Road is a key connection for commuters across Manawatū, Palmerston North and Rangitīkei Districts.

With both heavy commercial traffic and heavy motor vehicle use, the wear and tear on this particular road is high which accelerates the deterioration of the surface and contributes to increased maintenance.

Earmarked as one of the first projects for new roading contractor Fulton Hogan, the closure of the road from 15 July – 16 August, saw a 1km distance of the road widened, renewed and ultimately strengthened. A two-coat seal was applied; first coat of bitumen and large chip followed immediately after by a second coat of bitumen and smaller chip.

The Fulton Hogan team, which works with several locally established infrastructure contractors in the Manawatū, under took the project and worked weekends to ensure the timeline for the project was met.

Using key sub-contractors Graham Civil Contractors and JJ Walters, Fulton Hogan ensures the regional knowledge contributes to the overall projects and timelines.  “Having local crews not only supports the local industry but brings accountability and responsiveness to both the District Council and to those in the District that use the roading network, John Jones, MDC Roading Manager explains.”

Mild winter weather contributed to the successful delivery within the agreed upon timeline.  It’s the first of a multi-year contract between Fulton Hogan and the Manawatū District Council.
