Locally sourced Rimu tree helps Kopane School celebrate 100th anniversary

Kawakawa Nursery was honoured this week to add to the Kopane School Centenary by donating the locally sourced and grown Rimu tree that will be planted as part of the School’s commemorations taking place Friday 21 – Sunday 23 March.

Kawakawa Nursery is owned and operated by the Manawatū District Council and prides itself on locally eco-sourcing then growing plants to be supplied to organisations for revegetation projects throughout the Manawatū District.

Native to New Zealand, Rimu trees historically were one of the main sources of wood.  Due to their endangerment, they are now a protected tree from logging on public land.

The Rimu tree to be planted has been carefully cultivated by the dedicated team at Kawakawa Nursery.  “We are incredibly proud to add to the centenary celebrations in a way that will be enjoyed not only by those that attend the celebrations but for the students that will attend the School in years to come,” Paige Mey, Native Plant Manager explains.

The tree will be planted in a special location on the school grounds, where it will stand as a lasting legacy to the sustainability, resilience and growth of school’s past and future generations.

"We believe in the power of planting roots—whether it's a tree or a community connection," said Mey. “Nursery staff are excited to see how this tree will continue to grow alongside future generations."
