New Lime Paths Pave the Way to a Safer, More Connected Community

The newly completed lime paths stretching along Watershed Road, now serve as safe, accessible walkway.

What began as a physical endeavour—digging, grading, layering and compacting—has transformed into something much more than improved infrastructure.  The newly completed lime paths stretching along Watershed Road, now serve as safe, accessible walkways for students heading to school, residents exercising in the evening, and neighbours reconnecting face to face in a world that often feels too fast.

The project has been largely led by the Hiwinui Community Committee and driven by the Community Plan developed by input from local residents.  With a strong committee and two leading men, Phil Pirie and Richard Ramson, the committee planned with attention, built with determination and completed most of the extension of the paths over a weekend.

Manawatū District Council, was a strong financial support for the project.  As each community committee receives funding, Council is the conduit to ensure the funding is used with in a way that best suits the needs and aspirations propelled by the community.

And the result for the Hiwinui Community? A walk to school that no longer feels like a risk, but a morning ritual. A walk after dinner that now invites conversations with neighbours. These paths invite feet of all ages—from strollers to sneakers to seniors’ shoes, even horse hooves—creating new ways for people to be together, safely and meaningfully.

“It’s been a wonderful project that started with the safety of students in mind and has united the community both in the programme of work along with the social connection, unexpectedly created”, Helen King MDC Community Services Coordinator reaffirms. “Council is proud to work along Community Committees to ensure that the work completed meets the needs of the individual communities throughout the District.” The Hiwinui walkways are an ideal example of what can be accomplished when community voices and Council work together.
